Wieliczka is famous throughout Poland and around the world for its unique salt mine. It was established in the 13th century and it is one of the oldest mines of this type in the world. Today, salt is no longer mined from there, but this unique underground mine complex is well-preserved as a world-class monument. The Wieliczka Mine has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List, including due to its impressive underground chambers entirely carved out of salt.
